Process Quality Assurance
HW&W has a significant business focus on software process quality assurance. HW&W blends unique methodologies, based on established software engineering management practices, with an experienced staff. This combination, established in a collaborative environment and customized for each project, enhances productivity and assures that development goals are met or exceeded.

The QA Process
HW&W designed and developed a complete software QA process, based on source documents such as the Software Engineering Institute's Capability Maturity Model and the IEEE Standards Guide. The QA process covers standards, practices, conventions, and metrics used for each life cycle development phase, as well as all reviews and associated documentation. The QA process can be adapted to various software development methodologies and processes, and is capable of supporting organizations through SEI CMM Level 4 operation.

The HW&W QA process is both corrective and predictive. It specifies how compliance will be monitored, and how metrics will be gathered and analyzed to ensure process improvement. It describes required reviews, as well as the conduct and objectives of these reviews. The process uses specially designed forms to collect and document information from reviews (inspections, walk-throughs, and technical reviews).

Requirements are categorized by type, driving the specifications for requirements traceability and providing functional specifications for the software programs that manage requirements. Quality metrics, tied to the requirements, are then identified, and quality factors are defined. Defect categories are broken down by class and severity. The metrics data are collected on deficiencies, analyzed, and presented in a graphic or tabular form, as appropriate, for review with development managers.

HW&W's Approach
Much of the rigor and strength of the QA process derives from the experience of the HW&W QA team. Team members are senior software developers with 20 or more years of experience. They have managed large development teams and have participated in all phases of the software development life cycle. The QA team receives continual training, research, and certification in quality methods.

This experience enables the QA team to maintain the independence and rigor of the QA process while understanding and working with the development manager. HW&W team members work to fully understand and describe quality issues for the software development manager. The emphasis is on a collaborative rather than an adversarial relationship, with the software development team. This collaboration preserves quality while assisting in cost and schedule control.
