Proactive organizations use best practices
research as a model for restructuring their business processes to meet
new business challenges. Once the new processes have been designed,
they must be successfully integrated into the operations of the
organization. Staff needs to assimilate the new processes and to learn
how to perform in a manner conducive to achieving the new business
goals. HW&W provides customized group coaching to facilitate this
transition. This coaching serves two purposes: 1) It raises the level
of awareness regarding the need for change; and 2) it equips staff with
the new skills necessary to meet the objectives of the changed
environment.
HW&W's Methodology HW&W
has developed a basic curriculum for coaching sessions that is
customized to support specific client requirements. The session
objectives and critical success factors are derived from interviews and
focus group discussions. The session materials are based on those used
by the client organization. The level of the instruction is based on
the level of experience of the class members. Small groups are coached
in an interactive one-day session that includes a workshop. When
appropriate, computer simulation is used as a learning mechanism.
Instructors with knowledge and experience in the subject matter lead
each session.
HW&W's Approach We
begin by meeting with the primary management official to gain a
complete understanding of the rationale behind the need for coaching.
We then meet in separate facilitated sessions with groups of managers
and staff to ascertain their view of the needs and their expectations
with regard to the proposed coaching session.
The next step is to conduct best practices research focused on how the
most effective organizations approach the subject. Once the research is
completed the curriculum is developed. This curriculum includes a
detailed description of course content, a lesson plan, session
materials, a manual for post-session review, and exercises to be
conducted during the session. All new coaching activities begin with a
pilot session in which the curriculum is presented. The pilot session
is evaluated by both the participants and the session leader and is
modified as a result of lessons-learned.
Sessions are typically structured so that the morning is
dedicated to understanding the principles of the best practices
approach. This is done through lecture, interactive exercises, and
discussion. Multi-media tools are used to enhance the learning
environment. In the afternoon the class applies the knowledge that they
have accumulated in the morning. While they work on their individual or
team assignments, the instructors move about the class providing
individual coaching. At the end of the session, attendees share their
work products.
After the coaching session, an instructor is available to review points
with the class members or to help them with related assignments.
